Ammar Malek
Senior Staff Nurse, Changi General Hospital
King’s College London has always been my number one choice for nursing. The decision to enrol in King’s MSc in Clinical Nursing programme stemmed from a desire to deepen and enhance my understanding of nursing practice. I learned about the programme through extensive research on reputable institutions offering continuing education programmes for nurses, coupled with recommendations from colleagues within the nursing community. My motivation to pursue higher education in nursing was fuelled by a commitment to professional growth and also the recognition of the evolving demands of the healthcare landscape in Singapore. By advancing my education, I aim to expand my knowledge, refine my leadership abilities, and hone my critical thinking skills to navigate complex healthcare situations effectively.

Staff Nurse, TTSH Emergency Department
During the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic, my experience at TTSH ED was one of the most challenging yet exhausting periods of my life. Although it was emotionally and physically demanding, it instilled in me a resolute desire to further my studies and practice throughout my nursing career. Engaging with terminally ill and infirm patients led me to ponder on the realities of life. Nurses play an important role in supporting patients and their families during difficult times. Throughout this period, I noticed that my diploma knowledge and experience were insufficient to help me to work efficiently in the ED. This realization drove me to further my knowledge of nursing and skill set at King’s College, a reputable and prestigious university. Studying for a nursing

Quality Management Specialist, IHH Healthcare Singapore
My last pursuit of professional learning was in 2008 – 12 years ago when I commenced the degree in nursing studies. I felt that it was timely to undertake degree in nursing studies, so that I can keep myself up-to-date with clinical practices. It also prepares me to participate / contribute to the design and conduct of research or quality studies. I feel that I can effectively transfer learning to practice and have been actively leading/facilitating improvement work, and participating as a research member. Research, Dissertation as well as the Geriatric modules are my favourites. The degree strengthens my ability to assist in research, undertake literature review, analyse quality of published research/quality studies and their findings, and understand how to design studies; it also increases

Firstly, I’m attracted to KCL because the institution is the only one that offers part-time nursing bachelor’s degree with Honours. Secondly, KCL offers diverse modules such as physical examinations, education, and research, and students can choose among 4 modules that they are interested in. Most classes were conducted online and in the evenings , so that nursing students won’t face issues with their work schedules. Physical examination module really helped me a lot and I understand what the doctors were assessing during the rounding. The dissertation module helped me understand better on thesis writing. In real life, nurses are expected to take part in QI projects, and with the help of this module, the research component of the QI was smooth. Great discipline is required.

The modules covered were relevant and applicable in my place of work.; For instance after covering and completing the Legal, Ethics and Professionalism module, I have a better understanding of the case laws to further enhance my knowledge to abide by our SNB codes to provide professional care to my clients . The Teaching and Learning module also shed light on my knowledge to better interact and cater to the learning needs of the nursing students that were attached to my ward. Healthcare is always evolving. I feel that furthering my education is essential. By pursuing a bachelor’s degree, I’ll gain in-depth knowledge on nursing so that patients can have quality nursing care. I select the nursing school based on the offered module/curriculum. Besides, I also read the testimonies of the graduated students from the nursing school. At the same time, I attended the Information sessions conducted to retrieve more details about the programme. Elective modules offered by King’s College London like eldercare, and palliative care are areas that I am interested in. In the Polyclinic, there are nursing students or new staff that come to our clinic for attachment. This module taught me what is the most effective way to support nursing students, new graduates, or

I have gained in-depth knowledge on assessing patients. Now I am able to quickly detect any abnormalities presented by my patient and promptly communicate these findings to the doctors and carry out treatment without delay. One of the most memorable experiences I had was with my lecturer, Sarah Curr. It occurred during my dissertation, a time when I felt lost. The topic I had chosen was something I was enthusiastic about, but it was extensive and challenging. I regularly messaged Ms. Sarah to seek clarification and guidance. I can still vividly recall how she offered guidance in every possible direction. She promptly steered me back in the right direction whenever I diverted I am grateful to Ms Sarah for her unwavering support and guidance.

Not the easiest task to do, but it is pretty much like juggling work and personal life. It is about setting priorities . I believe one must be mindful and stay in the present moment. One afternoon, I was tasked to administer medication for an elderly woman via her rectum. She was petite and gentle. I explained the procedures to her and proceeded with the administration of medication and dressing. After the procedure, I apologised for any discomfort she may have experienced in the process. She reached out and pulled me closer to her and uttered “thank you” into my ears. With a simple yet profoundly heartfelt “Thank you”, she conveyed her gratitude. At that moment, tears welled up in my eyes. I truly felt
